Dr. Freeland Dunker, D.V.M., Chief Veterinarian at the Academy of Sciences -Steinhart Aquarium, discusses some of the challenges that he and his staff have confronted in successfully maintaining the aquarium's rainforest exhibit since it first opened for public viewing in 2008. The rainforest exhibit is a ninety-foot glass sphere, which houses insects, fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals from four geographical regions (Borneo, Madagascar, Costa Rica, and the Amazon Basin). To preserve the health of this downscaled rainforest, Dr. Dunker relies on a collaborative team of specialists with expertise in aviculture, herpetology, horticulture, biology, and endangered species trade policy.
