Hi there, Rick! I'm repairing a Philips 5 tube radio, which has the filament string connected in series, similar to this one. I noticed that when I turn it on, the filament of one of the tubes (the UF89) gets brighter than it should be , and then dims as the other filaments start to glow. I don't know if that's much of a problem, since the tubes (except for the rectifier) are all original, but I'd like to know your opinion about it. Thank you very much in advance, Rick!

Yes, that probable is normal. I have seen radios do that, its always scary though.

Great job, Rick! Barry asked me about this one, and I did not have a clue. I never would have thought that bypass would cause the heater string to continue to work.

Thanks. Well I've been working on radios and electronic equipment starting in grade school. I had the good fortune to know some people who guided my troubleshooting skills and I also got some tremendous training from the USAF. I wrote my books in that similar style.

Having that second lamp in series might have helped to keep it from blowing.
