These craft were originally developed by the Soviet Union as very high-speed military transports, and were based mostly on the shores of the Caspian Sea and Black Sea. The largest had max take-off weight over 544 tonnes. About 120 ekranoplans (A-90 Orlyonok class) were initially planned to enter military service in the Soviet Navy.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union smaller ekranoplans for non-military use have been under development. The CHDB had already developed the eight-seat Volga-2 in 1985, and Technologies and Transport developed a smaller version by the name of Amphistar.

  • Additionally, I have removed much of the comment chain that led up to my error. For two reasons. 1) There is no point in keeping incorrect information posted so as to possibly further misinform. 2) The dialog became offensive, as is so often to happen in the anonymous world of YouTube and the internet, so I took it down for that reason as well. I normally don't even comment at all on the videos we post for that very reason and regret that I did in this case and for the incorrect info.

  • Hello... I posted a comment earlier that incorrectly stated this plane could gain high altitude. I have since learned this is incorrect. It can gain some additional altitude to avoid waves or choppy seas, but it is not designed to go thousands of feet above sea level like regular airplanes. The ground effect is actually a part of it's lift. My area is watches. Not planes. I was misinformed about one of the aspects of this plane and then erroneously passed that on. My apologies.

  • 20 Feet above the surface? Rollers in the ocean are commonly 70 ft! What a waste of human effort!

  • This creation is too big and like a bloated gov`t would sink under it`s own weight. Or get sunk rather easily by America`s military.

  • The Seamonster is coming back, in near future.

  • a flying boat...or a boating plane...?? i sure as hell not wanna go fishing , on the lakes where this one travels !!

  • Russians are pretty smart. I gotta admit.

  • @WatchKomrade I completely agree that the dialog becomes unnecessarily offensive on youtube.

  • Best footage I've ever seen on this rare bird. Thanks for posting!

  • hmm wing and ground effect

  • It can gain some altitude to escape big waves. It also can fly above more or less level ground.

  • oh wait a wave
