Try the G-D-D-G tuning (D string & high E removed) it's an excellent tuning for writing vocal melodies, hence songs. It allows you to approach your playing as one big open 5th- as you add simple fingering you can turn this big fifth into major or minor with ease. Sure you only have four strings, but the sonic quality is very full. You will find it is very easy to carry your singing wherever your playing goes and vise-verse. Don't worry about theory or chords use a micro cassette for ideas.

You two smoke! Nice everything. I especially like your guitar playing. Do you use an alternate tuning? I play and sing too and although I learned with standard tuning and played that way for years. Then one summer while I was living in the sticks of southern Ohio I broke two strings- the high E and the D string. Instead of driving 20 miles to get new strings I tuned it to G-D-D-G ( actually f#-c#-c#-f#). The 2 D's are unison- 1 string wound & 1not. and the G's are 1octave apart. continued ..
