If you have read the original Joseph Pilates books For Your Health and Return to Life through Contrology, you will understand that Joseph himself called this exercise "The Side Kick Kneeling". As this exercise has evolved over time, properly trained Pilates instructors teach variations of this exercise to include not only "front/back" but also "up/down" and "small circles". This IS an original Pilates exercise.

@gates: Pilates lost their trademark rights in a 2000 judgment. As of then anything resembling Pilates can be legally called pilates. Just as making up your own dumbbell exercise is still called weight training, made-up Pilates is now called pilates: it's become a generic term.
