I can't believe I got to sit and talk to this amazing person and ask him some questions over a cup of coffee. Someone should pinch me! Mr. Michel, you're at n++ on my scale of glacial humans!!!

I asked Bruno:
+If I could call him Bruno
+If he thought we'd get to exabyte computing within the 11year cycle he identified.
+Why he said, "IF" in regards to companies wanting to invest in this technology, and wouldn't the cloud computing folks all want to invest in it?
+If his great statistics and slides were publicly distributable (they are - look on USENIX; I saw him hand off his PDF to Rik Farrow!).

Bruno also says that we must accelerate the investment in and usage of this new packaging technology in order to help the climate. He said that it was astonishing even to the researchers the level of paradigm change these discoveries could provide.

I then took a moment to ask Bruno about his field of biophysics, and mentioned my own best friend's field (biochemistry). We spoke briefly about a project she'd worked on in bacteriorhodopsin. Shout out to Regina Monaco while interviewing Bruno Michel! Bruno went on to say that he believes that the best discoveries happen not in any one field but in between the fields.

The questions I asked him during his talk about the naming of machines and the definition of C4 flip chip technology were pretty good, too, imo. I hope I do have them on video! I did also ask him in-session to clarify, that this research as presented will have significant impact not only on datacenter cooling (which has a huge contribution into climate change), but also has applications in photovoltaic (solar cell) and desalination (clean drinking water) problems. That sounds pretty freakin amazing to me.

After I stopped recording, Bruno drank a sip of my coffee (we had changed seats at the beginning), we laughed. Then we spoke about his own personal experience watching the glaciers recede in the ?Swiss? mountains every year, as he's a mountaineer. I slyly told him my own definition/coinage of the term, "glacial." I had gotten tired of telling people they rock, or they're really cool...so I thought of the biggest coolest rockiest thing I could...glaciers...and started calling people glacial about 7 months ago.

And I can't believe I allowed a world-famous scientist to be videotaped, by me, without fixing his collar for him first. Truth in immediate-post-talk-interviewing!

Presentation slides are available at http://www.usenix.org/events/lisa09/tech/slides/michel.pdf.

Please note that the proper professionally-recorded videos are available on the USENIX web site if you are a USENIX member you have access. If you're not a member, JOIN! Good quality video at http://www.usenix.org/multimedia/lisa09michel.
