Joanne and her teen daughter, Amanda review Math Girls by Hiroshi Yuki
A huge phenomenon in Japan, Math Girls is translated into English and ready to take the rest of the world by storm. A combination of math textbook and young adult romance, this wonderful book can be read on several levels. If math is challenging, read it for the romance. Learning more math is easy because the discussion has a clear and logical flow. As they say, "Math isn't hard. Love is."

@websnarf: I haven't read "Surreal Numbers", but based on the comments on Amazon it looks like a similar kind of thing. Math Girls isn't focused on a single topic, though, more like a bit of this and a bit of that (see the Table of Contents in the sample PDF on the Bento Books website). It looks like Math Girls is written for a slightly younger audience, too, probably 11th grade through college. The "watching the unfolding process of doing math* aspect looks similar.

Is the book anything like "Surreal Numbers" by Donald Knuth (also a math story intertwined by a (admittedly fairly simple) romantic story)?
