Winterton is a small town between Scunthorpe and Barton upon Humber, in North Lincolnshire. It used to be smaller but it has expanded a lot over the last 50 years, thanks to incomers like my parents who decided that Winterton was a nice place to raise a family, so they built a house on the edge of the town 25 years ago. Winterton is really quite uninteresting and unremarkable. It hit the news recently because a local MP who lives there had been claiming on expenses for a mortgage that he had already paid off, but other than that, Winterton quietly sits there in the fields being nice.

Winterton church is an ancient foundation. The first stage of the tower dates from about 1050 to 1100, and the rest of the tower was built 100 years later. The church was added to over the years, and the victorians restored and remodelled it slightly. The east window is completely Victorian. In the video you can see the contrast between the arch of the tower (circa 1070) and the arches of the nave (circa 1200) On the 23rd of June 1997 I turned up in the belltower of this church and Frank taught me to ring. There was to start an obsession! In this video you can hear someone else being taught, on the same bell I learnt on which was cast in 1734 by Daniel Hedderly, a few hundred metres away from the church in the market place.

  • Goodness, that was me trying to learn... :|

  • This church is extremely beautiful and all church members, and many residents of Winterton, want to keep it safe for future generations to enjoy. The comments about the future of the church made by lorrylooloo below are simply not true. If lorrylooloo wishes to contact me via the church I can explain the current plans which have been widely discussed and are very different to the description below.

  • this is one of the most beautiful churches ive ever seen, my grandparents work there and have done most of their lives. Every year when i go and stay there in the summer i would love visiting on Sundays and prey x but now some of the members of the church want to tear down this church and make a completely modern church, either that or they will close it down. this is just not the right thing to do. this church has been standing since, 1213!!!!!!!!!!!! please help me to stop this. email me!!!!

  • this is where im getting maried! :)

  • i live there

  • I vaguely remember being there, or it was a different church which look liked that, but still i love the beauty of it; the statues and what have you.
