Buffy Sainte-Marie was born February 20, 1941 on the Piapot Cree Indian reserve in the Qu'Appelle valley, Saskatchewan, Canada. She is a singer-songwriter, musician, composer, visual artist, pacifist, educator, social activist, and philanthropist.In 1963, recovering from a throat infection Sainte-Marie became addicted to codeine and recovering from the experience became the basis of her song "Cod'ine", later covered by Donovan, The Charlatans, & the Quicksilver Messenger Service.

She showed up at my fathers bar ( the Barbarossa ) one night to hear his version of Cod'ine. The bar was jam packed, and he was working the door. He never met her before and didn't know what she looked like, so he sent her away. She never saw him perform.

I saw her in 1969. Think it was at Bard College, north of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She had a whole rock band with her and they did everything from Rock to Blues to Folk to Country to Blue Grass to a few places far away. Will be a fan forever. Native American yes. Great Soul absolutely!
