This is a video of a very big and friendly puffer fish that I encountered during my trip to Bonaire in March 2010. This was during one of our boat dives to Klein Bonaire, the small uninhabited island off the west coast of the main Island, where the reefs are more pristine and untouched. I believe the name of the dive site was "keepsake"

  • When they puff up like a ballon and you touch it will it's spikes hurt you?

  • @Humberto4790 I wouldn't know, I've never tried to get one to puff up just to touch it... Puffing up is a defense mechanism and it causes the puffer fish to become very very stressed. It is generally a bad idea, or at least not very nice to the fish, to try to get it to puff up because it can only puff up so many times in its lifetime before the stress kills it... But to answer your question, yeah, I would assume touching the spike would at the very least NOT feel pleasant.
