This is the song Springsteen first sang for future manager Mike Appel, who told him the song had no pop potential but he did like the line about them dancing to a silent band. Appel said if you get more songs to come by his office again, so Springsteen said sure. A few months later Springsteen returned and played him It's Hard To Be A Saint In the City, and the rest is history.
