In Boulder it's very common (and sometimes required by ordinance) to build brand new structures around existing walls and exteriors that are of historical or aesthetic significance. Over the years I've watched dozens of constructions projects where engineers anchor an old, existing wall in place while a new building is finished (and attached) behind it. The construction (and preservation) at Casey Junior High caught my attention because it seemed so much more expansive than previous projects.
