A used replacement OM616912 engine fitted to a 1982 W123 240D (same as original engine). A compression test was carried out after fitting the engine to the car with the following results: No.1 300-310psi, No. 2 340psi, No. 3 410psi, No. 4 420+psi. (Valve clearances were adjusted before compression test). Factory specification for cylinder compression is 425psi with max difference between any cylinder of 45psi. Engine is knocking. This knocking appears to stop when fuel line on No. 1 injector is loosened, also suggesting that knocking is from No.1. Lower frequency knocking is audible in cabin, possibly as a result of out of balance forces on the crankshaft (due to the difference in cylinder pressures).

  • shoeb2015: Yeah, 310 is pretty low for No. 1. Out of spec. also as the max. difference between cylinders should be 45psi. I might set the valve clearances and check it again some time in case rings have settled in (this 2nd hand engine was probably sitting for a while before it was fitted). All I can say is that it's running very well at the moment, but I'm not sure how many of the 72 horses that were there when it was new are left!

  • just 310psi in 1st cylinder when Factory specification for cylinder compression is 425psi.
