You don't need any politician to 'decide' to build a bionic eye. If tax dollars weren't being wasted on bullshit like this, more REAL ideas, would have the opportunity to take root.
Politicians asking for ideas under the pretence of listening to the public is disturbing - and no shock that Rudd should take this to it's most pseudo-intellectual, feel-good extreme.
Just a lame attempt to make central planning sound somehow egalitarian - not the elitist totalitarian bullshit it truly is.

Businesses try out their ideas in the marketplace, and we vote with our dollars.
Scientists try out their ideas, and the ongoing process of data collection, experimentation, peer review and debate separates the wheat from the chaff.
