Palmylink. An aerial ropeway connecting the City with the University. Palmerston North and Massey University, New Zealand. This gondola system will be the new bridge between town and gown raising productivity to new levels through targeted infrastructure development in what has come to be called Transit oriented development.

  • This is going to cost about $50 million. It takes just 30mins to walk from Massey to town. Instead of encouraging people to sit on their butts rather than use their feet, why not spend the money cleaning up the disaster zone that is the Manawatu River? Then this videos' claim that Palmy is "green" would have some basis in fact! Palmy has a perfectly good, internationally renowned bus system already. Public transport doesn't have to be complicated or expensive in order to be effective.

  • @palmy1985 excellent points. Just that people used to walk or bike to Massey. Now we have some buses which run full from 7 to 10. Try the Caltex bus stop. Lots of students bring cars. Only about 6% of our 10k students bring bikes or walk.

Are cars and buses cheaper for the community, the city, New Zealand and earth.

  • @koshermal I'm sure the Waiwhetu doesn't smell brilliant either. But the Manawatu River is worse. Smell, although often an indicator of underlying problems, is not the only indicator. The Manawatu is one of the most polluted and damaged rivers in the developed world. It has extremely high levels of very bad chemicals and is not safe to touch, let alone swim in or fish out of! And yes, I am qualified to say so - I have a Masters degree on the subject ;)

  • The river isn't THAT bad. Seriously. You should go have a sniff at the Waiwhetu.

  • What about including Linton?? most of Lintons population are Palmerston North rates payers compared to how many students?? seem like the cities rate payers will have to fund something we will never use...just like the Xmas tree...it is a good idea but not in the current financial climate and it seems to be biased towards massey instead of the city, money could be better spent on a new bridge.

  • for real???

  • Brilliant idea. I have lived in Palmy all my life and am currently a Massey student. It is easy to see how this would turn our relativly plain city into something that actually is in the 21st centrury. My only questions are costs. How much for the whole project? how much per ride. Students wont fork out much money at all (moslty because we dont have any). But if massey subsidied (much like the current bus system) then I can see it working well.

  • On the face of it , a good idea. The weakness of this system is reapair and maintenance downtime.

Voice-over to the video as a tad too much like drug-fueled optimism to me. The local economy will not be driven by Gondolas and nor will the environment be enhanced by its presence.

  • from uni staight into the empty vessel, WE ARE DOOOIIIN IT !!!!!!

  • PALMYLINK! LET DRINK!
