My third powerlifting meet which took place at a some Sportsfest, in 2007 about 2-3 months after my second powerlifting meet. That day I weighed 175 pounds, and there was no way I was going to sweat off 10 pounds to make the 165 pound class, I can get away with 4-5 pounds of water weight like my last competition, but 10 pounds for me is pushing it big time, the only time I would ever sweat off 10 pounds was jogging endlessly in hot weather back when I ran cross country back in high school, and after that I was literally exhausted big time and my lifts were always weak after running that much. So I just decided to compete in the 181 pound weight class this time, age 18-24 group (guessing on the age group), in the bench press and deadlift in the raw division . This competition was probably the largest of my competitions probably had 50-60 people. this was a raw and geared meet, mostly raw lifters, but there were also quite a bit of geared lifters.

{Bench Press Attempts}

First Attempt: 245 Pounds

Lift completed successfully, easy weight.

Second Attempt: 265 pounds

Lifted completed successfully, somewhat tough, but not to tough.

Third Attempt: 285 pounds

Lifted completed sucessfully, my max in training challenging but still nailed it, I didn't go for 290 pause, because I had missed every attempt on it in training, so I just went with 285 again, because it was still my current one rep max in training.

{Deadlift Attempts}

First Attempt: 365 pounds

Lifted completed successfully, easy weight.

Second Attempt: 405 pounds

Lifted completed successfully, moderate difficulty.

Third Attempt: 425 pounds

Lifted completed successfully, hard lift, but not extremely hard, after my last meet for some reason I just couldn't budge 455-430 pounds in training, I gradually got weaker my deadlifts maxes always ranged from 425-455 back then, I would be strong for a while, then I would be back down to 425 pounds, I was only hitting 425 in training before this meet, so I went for that, although I probably had 430-435 in me. I just wanted to focus on completing all my attempts successfully, I knew I was not going to break my personal record though.

{Awards Ceremony}

Took first place in the bench press with a lift of 285 pounds, second place hit 275, and missed two attempts with 295, due to hitting bench press hooks, before completing the lift, if he didn't hit the hooks he would have beaten me for sure, he completed the lift both attempts but hit the bench hooks twice, talk about bad luck. This guy was the only opponent in my weight class this time, and only competed n the bench press, he is actually the guy who spotted me on my second and third attempt. Took first place in the deadlift by default, nobody competed against me in the deadlift.

{My personal thoughts about the meet}

It was an ok performance, but was a little disappointing I didn't make the 165 pound weight class this time, also was a small disappointment that my deadlift was off by 30 pounds that meet, also my bench press stayed the same, but I just wanted to focus on getting all three lifts that day, that was my main goal, although I kind of regret not attempting 290 pounds, although I think I would have missed it, since I never was able to hit it in training before the meet. my victory on the bench press was not the best victory, since the rules helped me beat him, I would have preferred he get the lift or not at all, completing it or not completing it, not a victory because he hit bench press hooks, but oh well. I am thankful he helped with my spots, and vice versa.

{Other thoughts on the meet}

Heaviest bench press:

The heaviest bench press that day was 475 pounds by a guy in a bench press shirt who was either in the 220 or 242 pound weight class, in the geared division, no idea what age 30-40 maybe. A superheavyweight attempted 500 in a shirt but missed it. Heaviest bench press that day in the women's division was 250 pounds by a women in a bench shirt, weight class probably 181-198, age 25-35 probably. Best raw lift for men I don't really remember, same goes for the raw women bench presser's. There was also a 15 year old kid in the 220 pound weight class who hit 405 pound sin a bench shirt, that kid may have some potential as he gets older.

Heaviest Deadlift:

The heaviest deadlift was 550 done by two people a superheavyweight and a 275 pounder. The 275 pounder won overall since he weighed less. The Superheavyweight attempted 600 but missed it. They both were raw too. Have no idea what the heaviest deadlift was in the women division probably at least over 200 pounds. I do not think there were any people using deadlift suits either.

The Overall Winner:

Was a Superheavyweight probably age 25-32 that I mentioned before he had a bench press of 470-450 and had missed 500 on his third attempt in a bench press shirt, and a deadlift of 550 pounds, missing 600. So he had the overall he won with a combined weight of 1000+ pounds.

  • nice!!! you got 1st!!!

  • yep :)

  • Good meet! Did any of these meets have squats?

  • nope, but I hope to compete in a full meet eventually, doing all three lifts, just never had any luck finding full meets, but then again I just did minimal research on finding competitions in my area.

  • So what did you think of the NASA website?

  • I am thinking about looking into one of those meets, I was trying look for your records too, but I don't know your full name, is your name on there for setting the american record for the deadlift and curl?

    I read the rules too for the lifts, and I feel kinda pumped, I think I would suck at the curl, you know me I am either super strict or super cheat lol, but it would just be fun to try it out, also I really want to do a a full meet as well just for fun.

  • you thinking of doing a squat meet as well?

    what is your best square by the way?

  • And I haven't maxed squat in quite in a while. But i have done around 500 but not quite to parallel. But idk now really..lol

  • I don't know about the squating yet because I do so well at curls that i might as well stay in the powersports division. cuz my curl was an american record for all the weight classes ion highschool for a while.

  • My record are pretty recent so my world records have not yet been posted.But my American curl record is posted. Look under the 165 class for the highschool division for powersports.
