When the apartheid unionist state made it very violently clear that they wouldn't give catholics equality in northern irish society after the civil rights marches of the 60s, the provisional IRA was formed and had huge support.The IRA in modern times has lost widespread support, and the more talented and intelligent members it used to rely on, because of the current shared society, leaving the dregs and scum it often attracted as footsoldiers free to build self-serving and brutal criminal gangs
