Everyone check out the new blog at:
http://theartoftrey.blogspot.com/

It's hard to keep track of everything on youtube, so I started this.
Please check it out as I'd like to get something cool going for people who love Trey's style.

A lot of people have asked me how it is I sound so much like Trey. To those people, I must stress how much Phish I listen to and the fact that Trey is maybe my lone musical influence. I listen to other music, but I think as a guitarist I'm better off emulating Trey Anastasio than say, Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day. So the curse is that my sound isn't very original. Any Phish fan worth a damn can listen to me play guitar (any song with a solo, not just Phish) and know who I sound like. The blessing is... I sound like Trey.

A couple notes after recording that I'll make.
1. I mention strumming with the outside of my hand. I am an idiot. I meant finger. The outside of my right pointer finger.

2. I mention A minor when talking about Slave to the Traffic Light... I meant A Major. Also, I realize towards the end of that little solo I started to hit a few notes outside of the arpeggios. I couldn't help it; deal with it.

3. In the thing about the Harry Hood solo and my constant warning to "not end on D all the time", I'm talking about ending phrases with D. The progression D A G G will always take you back to D, but your solo can go many more places if you don't return there after every measure.

Any feedback would be appreciated. This is my first attempt at ever really trying to give advice of this sort.

Enjoy.

  • Hey if you would be so kind as too tell me....What are your compressor, ts9 knobs and amp/guitar volume levels set at? Basically, how do you get that sustain?

  • @phanatic09 check out the pictures on my blog (that i never update): theartoftrey.blogspot.com/

  • hood isnt G A D, its D A G

  • really really helpful man. Beyond the great proficiency, you've definitely got a grace to your playing that most guitarists fail to master or respect (in my opinion thats what makes Trey, Jerry, etc so great)

  • Seriously man - watching this and your other video on Jiboo, you could stand in for Trey on any given solo. You have his phrasing style and his intonation fucking nailed.

  • Who has been asking you to post lessons on how to play Phish? Get over yourself. Duh! Your Annoying!

  • Yah thanks for this, I have played guitar for quite some time and listen to Phish probably %80 of the time all the time. I have never been able to capture Trey's sound, while I have experimented with arpeggio's and I know some Phish songs, capturing Trey solo's like this is something I hope to accomplish and this video is pretty spot on I must say

  • dude dont get down on yourself, you are just as good if not better than a lot of musicians playing professionally out there

  • Great lesson dude, thanks!

  • a truely gifted guitarist man. I wish i could play as well as you!

  • @PHISHcvm But, depending upon the chord progression, you can also alternate between G major and G mixolydian (as well as other modes). I don't really know much about this aspect of mode usage, so I can't really help you there. An example of this, in Phish terms, would be the "Down With Disease" jam, where Trey uses A Mixolydian, A Dorian, and A Minor Pentatonic
