The significance is that the cave is naturally formed by water, so the area must at some time in the past been a lake or reservoir...The reasons that it is the cave as depicted on the altar at the church at Rennes-les-Chateau, are that when you stand at the altar and look towards the other end of the church, Jesus(the sun) is stood on a rhombus\diamond stone, that is close to the cave,also in the painting a building is depicted, i can show these , then Mary Mag is in line with Madeline, Paris..

The reason the priests painted the cave was so it would be found.....This is because the cave has been naturally created, because were it is situated was once a huge lake....To understand the significance of this you need to Read "The Epic of Kharsag" it is six thousand years old from Sumeria(Google it)....This lake supplied the water for the Garden of Eden that is described in the Epic of Kharsag...
