Yes, a worthy sequel. Intelligent science fiction and there's something about it's 80s view of the future that I find quaint yet awesome. I also like that it doesn't try to recreate 2001. Heck, it simply follows Arthur C. Clarke's novel and he's just as much creator of 2001 as Kubrick. So that's good enough for me (and even Clarke said he wasn't too concerned about the fact that the scientific/historical ideas in his books might become outdated, a criticism silly people make on the films).

Is it just me or does the voice at the beginning who says my god it's full of stars sounds like Freddy Krueger?

HAL followed "hidden orders." The doctor that created HAL found those in his memory banks so the mission was bound to fail sooner or later. I'm surprised it didn't fail the moment they left Earth.

If you think about it Hal was just following his orders to keep the mission from failing no matter the cost.
