you're right, your arguments are spot on. It must just be that the following people who advocated being vegetarian weren't very smart: plato, socrates, pythagoras, leonardo da vinci, einstein, gandhi etc etc. In fact the greatest thinkers our race has produced have all been horrified by the idea of killing animals. modify the environment. Most animals are sentient, and that is a fact that is well supported by brain science and any reasonable philosophy of mind (for instance 'functionalism', google that). It also a well studied issue whether pigs experience stress and boredom when they are put in cages throughout their lives. It so happens that they do suffer, and the argument that "they do not know freedom, therefore they cannot tell the difference" is in fact wrong.

It assumes that just because something has been in a certain way in the past it means that it is ethical. I think my one of my favorite arguments against vegetarianism is "I have canines because I was meant to eat meat." We have four canines as opposed to cats, dogs, or other carnivores who have a mouthful. Humans were only meant to eat meat once in a great while when there was no other food source available. Living in this day and age means that we are capable of of making responsible decisions. I recommend Shelley Williams' "Sick of Vegan Opinions" video.
