ANTHONY LANE SAID: "Scorsese. And Woody Allen. And Tarantino. Who's younger and so forth. If we knew who he was. There's a slight sort of hothouse air to their movies. That they have decided that the movies are a better place to live than real life."

  • He says that in Annie Hall they go to the planetarium, but that is in Manhattan.

  • I couldn't disagree with you more. He may be obnoxious, he'd probably be the first to admit it, but after Clive James, he writes the most elegant prose going. I couldn't care less what he thinks. If you can dress it up like he does, then I'll swallow it whole.

  • He is the only critic out there that understands truly tasteful movies; He's the only critic I read and trust (Times, Village Voice, most of them just suck)

  • Critics are so good at keeping artists on their toes...but isn't it better for artists to interact and push each other, rather than have a sideline spectator ultimately calling the shots? Mr. Lane is a brilliant critic with important things to say about art, but aside from non-fiction, what art has he actually created? Why listen to what critics say about artists rather than what other artists say about their peers? That being said, I think Mr. Lane is brilliant, if a bit prissy.

  • Anthony Lane and Alex Ross have become the only reasons I still read The New Yorker. Their prose is so elegant and mind-f*ckingly creative.

  • Agree !

  • Lane is just brilliant, and this book is a real joy to read,I´d reccomend it to anybody who cares about movies and good reading generally.

  • Yeah, Nobody's Perfect. But Lane comes close.

  • what can i say? one of the greatest critics of the age.
