I did my research, unlike you, it seems.
The drug smuggler they shot at got immunity from our own government to testify against them in court. And the drug smuggler was CAUGHT AGAIN smuggling drugs into the US.
Now, when Ramos and Compean were in the situation that happened, seeing the drug smuggler reach behind them and pull out an object that was shiny and metal, I don't think it would have been an egg beater, they felt reasonably sure their life was in danger and decided to act.
