Norma Galafassi explains her experience of fundraising through a recession and banking collapse in Argentina at the session held on fundraising and the current economic crisis at the International Fundraising Congress, Holland, 17 October 2008, 8-9am.
Her charity experienced all its deposits being frozen.
NGOs' work was more appreciated by people: it was easier to ask people to give. Companies were also more interested in helping: a food bank finally secured its partnership with Santander Bank, which worked well for both parties. The bank offered its marketing staff (who had nothing to do in the crisis) to help create and run the food bank's individual giving campaign - telephone fundraising, direct mail etc. That's how the food bank got its first donors.
