As there are several different versions of Loom, I felt that my video of the Steam release had to be complemented with this video of the FM TOWNS edition (played through the SCUMMVM frontend).

Back in the early 1990s I personally played the original PC EGA version, which was then succeeded by a VGA CD-ROM with voice acting, which in turn is the foundation for the recent Steam release. Unfortunalety, for technical reasons a lot of the dialogue from the DOS version had to be cut out when the game made the first transition to fully voiced CD-ROM, and thus the version available on Steam is not as complete as one would have wanted.

However, there is another, lesser known port of the game (originally made for the rather obscure PC variant FM TOWNS) which has the VGA graphics of the upgraded CD-ROM version as well as looping background music of higher quality but does not include any voice overs. Also, a completely new difference introduced by the Steam re-release is that a smoothing effect has (by default) been applied to the graphics in the new downloadable version (it can easily be turned off, though).

  • Loom goes along with The Dig as some of the poorer adventure titles LucasArts had made in my opinion, the puzzles aren't exactly very spectacular and the narrative isn't as interesting as the many other adventure titles of the time.

  • I agree with you on the puzzles (although the actual gameplay mechanic are kind of neat) but disagree with you on the narrative.

At the time, Loom's somber fantasy tale was a fresh departure from the intentionally silly storylines of Lucasarts other games, and in narrative terms the game was only surpassed many years later with the release of Grim Fandango.

  • Messenger Nymph? I though Nymphs were supposed to be sexy naked female creatures.

  • Apparently not in this zip code...

  • Demiath! you wouldnt happen to know where i could get this for scumm along with some other of my favorites like sam and max and full throttle?

  • When I came to Australia, I played this point and click game that my dad found on a Russian site. Only 10 levels....of awesomeness. Puzzle point and click games remain on my list of greatest games.

  • now THIS is an interesting looking game!
