AM stands for "automotrice" which means it's self powered, so there is no need for another engine of course. But you sound like you don't know that I11 cars look exactly the same as AM96. And since I11 are only passenger cars, they do need an external engine to push/pull them.

The AM96 is never pulled by a HLE13.
