Agreed Red, the history of the FA Cup is always there evey year but the thrill and romance of games like this have gone now , although no one can tak e the memories it seems no one cares now and its all about the glamour and money. This game was played 4 months before i was born and those days are gone, thankfully we can look back with pride however at what used to be.
I remember this as if it were yesterday, it's ashame games like ths are gone, with big teams now caring nothing about anything but money, the romance and drama of the FA cup and League cup gone now. It's so sad, all anyone wants these days is mancs barcelona in in euro final. Im glad I can go back and relive these great games, and great teams. remember Arsenal v Swindon???
mahon257 alrite mate , funny enough was back in northampton ,last xmas. when i caught up with my mate mike and john k. he turned 70 this year and he,s fit and well,
Crawford was awesome natural striker-had come out of non league football at
35 years old (!) to play for Colchester
£40 million+ in today's market
i saw George Best, Peter Knowles, Rodney Marsh, all great creative players, but none so deadlier striker than Crawford-only Jimmy Greaves out-scored Crawford on goals per game ratio
Adam Smith, the goalkeeping coach of the MLS Portland Timbers recently pointed out that it's his dad Graham (who also played for WBA) in goal for Colchester. Great save at 4:50.
Yes, we have seen all kinds of seismic shocks over the years, but this registers about 8.9 on the Richter scale. Sutton v Coventry was big, as was York v Spurs (1955) but there was something about Leeds (the team everybody outside of Leeds hated) that marked them as THE one to beat - and we knew this sort of thing would NEVER happen to them. Three nil down to a 4th Div team? Dream on. And then it did. Boy, did we laugh. A bit like Man U 0 York City 3 in the Carling Cup.
if you weren't alive at the time, it would be hard to imagine the shock of the nation at this result. in my opinion, this is the greatest fa cup giant-killing of all time. that leeds team were invincible, hated, feared and admired in equal measure. hard to believe how few videos there are of it, on youtube. well done colchester, a result you can be rightly proud of.
Ray Crawford was a genius, a natural goalscorer-he had come back from non-league football at the age of 35! -to put about the top team in Europe at the time out of FACup!
Only Jimmy Greaves outscored Crawford on a goals per game ratio
Greaves scored a goal every 1.4 games, Crawford every 1.5 games
Jack Charlton HATED playing against Crawford, as Ray always scored when playing against him-Charlton rated him as about the best centre-forward he ever
Fabtastic.....I was there...can see myself behind the goal that Ray Crawford scored his goals in.....Have not seen this since that day in Feb 71...when I was 12...brilliant.. :)

Ray Crawford and Colchester were truly inspirational on this day. Crawford`s best days were spent at Ipswich he won a couple of England caps.
