  • I never understood the moon made out of Swiss cheese error. For instance, why would it glow. maybe a lantern or a great spirit or something like that.

As to my error, yes knowledge and context are vitally important. I was listening to a podcast which illuminated a quote mine used so frequently out of context (mostly quite innocently).

  • Tomas Jefferson

    out of context:

"Christian philosophy, the most perverted system that ever shone on man"

    in context:

"Those who live by mystery & charlatanerie, fearing you would render them useless by simplifying the Christian philosophy, the most sublime & benevolent, but most perverted system that ever shone on man, endeavored to crush your well-earnt & well-deserved fame."

Jefferson was a Unitarian, the letter was to Joseph Priestly titled "SOMETHING NEW UNDER THE SUN"

  • I do not think it is appropriate to call Jefferson an unitarian. He was a thoughtful and reflective man. The unitarian movement was based on the Jeffersonian Bible. But Jefferson himself, he was just thinker first and foremost. The unitarians came later.

  • 'I never understood the moon made out of Swiss cheese error.' No because you have always lived in a world where people understood better and it is common knowledge.

  • That was a stove. Right now I get it. She seemed a little depressed and the last scene had an awful lot of smoke in the background. I thought it might be some kind of suicide scene or something.

  • I really enjoyed having that conversation with you. Until you mentioned it I had no idea that the final scene could be interpreted that way. The flame from the lamp, the smoke in the background, the depressed woman - she must have set the house on fire. Come to think of it this is the same kind of mistake as saying that the moon is made of swiss cheese. Only when we know more things do we realize the mistake we made earlier on.

  • This such a nice song!!

  • I too was guilty for taking this quote mine at face value.

  • I understood what you said very early on. Without the movie to provide the context, there is room for misinterpretation.
