I don't know how much research they put into the W220 and the new W221, but I know it's not as much as they did in the W140. I know that the W221's that started in 2007 are doing very well though, no recalls or overly faulty parts like in the early W220's. Don't get me wrong though, a bit faulty or not, Mercedes is my love and passion. I'd drive nothing but Mercedes and have driven nothing but Mercedes (for the most part) My first car was a W124, now those cars were quality!
It was roughly in the mid-2000's when Mercedes began ensuring their cars were up to par again, but sometimes they bite off more they can chew and still have small issues especially with the S-Class. The 2004's still had issues with the ABC suspension or Air-matic suspension leaks, or motor failures with the suspension. If my memory serves me correctly, they put 1 billion dollars of research into the W140 which would amount to like 2 billion now, their standards reached a low.
This is one of my favorite cars. Very clean German Beast!

I told my Subaru "Radio" it answered "Go buy me one from Wal-Mart you bum".

@importcamel03
I thought that 03 was actually the first year Mercedes took a better hold to ensure parts were better and whatnot.
