To Quote Zeppelins late manager Peter Grant. "The boys blew that clumsy butterfly right off of the stage"
-
Yes, I was there, The Butterfly had just played the Electric Factory in Phila, Pa the week before..This WAS Zeps USA debut in NY, and it WAS a hard pill to swallow-Zep Stole the Show-BIG TIME- and they were the Opening Support Act=-since I was a guest of the Butterfly ( my Sisters BF was their Manager) I was on the side of the Stage the whole Show- Got to meet Page&Plant, and that was cool...but the Butterfly were NOT amused of the UpStage--

My main reason for commenting was to thank the OP for posting this clip. I am thrilled to know it was captured because I often feared I had dreamed (hallucinated?) that incredible experience -- that maybe it never actually happened. But it did and we were there and so was the OP. The LZ set forever changed my perception of what rock music and live performance could be--also one of the few times in my life I was aware I was witnessing a pivotal point in history, in this case, musical history.

I too was at this performance with my future husband (we're still together). Don't recall if it was the early or the late show. Had never heard of LZ. Their music was LOUD and creative and transcendant and unlike anything we'd ever heard. Blew us out of the water. IB came out in matching tie-dyed caftans but now no one was in any mood to sit quietly and listen. IB proceeded to diss the audience as too rowdy and the room too smokey. Their set did not go well but no one cared about IB anymore.

Wait. I thought this was the show that Iron Butterfly refused to go on because they were so unsettled by the audience reaction to Led Zeppelin. I read Richard Cole's book and he was saying how Zep were supposed to go on first and then Delaney & Bonnie and then Butterfly. But Peter Grant wanted to see Zep and Butterfly play back to back, so they switched and Doug Ingle bugged out and they didn't go on. I thought that was John Paul Jones at the end of the clip no?

@cowboysfan782008 True I heard peter said that but also I heard that at one show the band "ten years after" were so good that the public demanded encore after encore. They just didn't want to let them leave the stage. Peter grant seeing that zeppelin were being upstaged & in trouble, ordered his roadies to take "Ten years after's" equipment down. This was sometime in 1969, just shows what great bands they had.

@45arther WHATTT!!!??

I saw Led Zep and Iron Butterfly August 1970 in Winnipeg. What a show!
-
Sadly. The first recording was December 30th 1968 in Gongoza.
-
@LedZepfilm Sorry -- first U.S. date, I should have said. I've never heard of any footage existing of that first date, but the promoter, Barry Fey, swears the show was recorded and broadcast the next day on a.m. radio. Years of searching have turned up nothing.
-
@markbrow The first date was September 7, 1968. Billed as the Yardbirds.
Your right that's a great observation daddyknob!, I remember they both had that classic Atlantic record logo on their 12 " lps then. Never thought about the business of music back then. Well put!
