Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band - The Promise at Boston Music Hall in Boston MA on March 22/1977

THE PROMISE - Fall / Winter 1976 - Early 1977

Well Johnny works in a factory and Billy works downtown
Terry works in a rock & roll band
Looking for that million-dollar sound
Me I don't do nothing much
And I spend my time alone
Some nights I go to the movies
And some nights I stay home
You see I followed that dream
Just like those guys do way up on the screen
Drove a chopped up Challenger
Down route 9
Through the dead ends and all the bad scenes
And when the promise was broken
I cashed in a few of my dreams
Well now I built that Challenger by myself
But I needed money and so I sold it
And now I lived a secret I should've kept to myself
But I got drunk one night and I told it
And all my life I fought that fight
The one that no man can ever win
And every day it just gets harder
To live the dream I'm believing in

Thunder Road....
I stay up every morning until it turns light
Thunder Road....
There's something burning now on the highway tonight

Well now I won big once and I hit the coast
Yeah, but somehow I paid the big cost
inside I felt like I was carrying the broken spirits
Of all the other onces who'd lost
Yea when the promise is broken you go on living
But man it cuts something from down in your soul
Like when the truth is spoken
And it don't make no difference
Something in your heart turns cold
Well I followed that dream, well me and some guys
Through the dead ends and all the two-bit bars
The night the promise was broken
I was drunk and far away from home
Sleeping in the back seat of a borrowed car

Thunder Road....
Here's one for the lost lovers and all the fixed games
Thunder Road....
Here's one for the tires rushing by in the rain
Thunder Road....
I remember what me and Billy we'd always say
Thunder Road....
We were gonna take it all and throw it all away

  • I love how everyone is loud and roudy at the start, but by half way through everyone is just quiet. I loved this song from the first time I heard it, and I'm sure the people here feel the same way. Bruce can bring people to their feet and sit them back down again, and make both just as enjoyable, like no other.

  • this hits hard man , right in the gut

  • @Portayto

You have the time machine in this song, baby.

  • "Sit down you creeps"

  • Again, I have Lived to Tell-apologies to Madonna-because I'll always live through The Promise. In the artwork, Bruce Springsteen writes "Now the Promise is Broken/You go on Living/But it Steals Something down in Our Souls/The Truth is Spoken/It Does Not Make Any Difference/Something in Our Hearts Run Cold!" Thanks Bruce for giving me courage to go on Living so that the Next Promise Isn't Broken in my life. Hey Bruce, You Rock!

  • i tell you, i lived this song. it was not beautiful or very romantic, but by the grace of God, i lived through it.

  • @1pbrodie Good History...either way...it is off the charts. Thank you for posting. That was worth the price of admission...I will be looking for Forced to Confess.

  • ....there's something dyin on the highway tonight

  • @Lempke1972a The 'new' version of The Promise lacks that amazing 'way down in my boots' voice that Bruce does here.
