Between AD 850 and 1250 ancient Chaco Canyon thrived as a major Puebloan center. The Chacoan dwellings are part of the homeland of New Mexico's Pueblo Indian peoples, including the Hopi Indians of Arizona, and the Navajo Indians of the Southwest.

  • i live 30 mins away from here, there are many ruins high in the mountains where people don't go anymore.

  • @scheming8rythem - I am so glad that people don't go there anymore. Maybe both land and ruins can remain sacred. Thank you for stopping in and sharing this. :)

  • I finally visited Chaco last week. I have wanted to go ever since I saw the video by Robert Redford. Like desertsurvivalist said, photos do not do it justice. I will go back with the grandkids. Thanks!!

  • Dear Richard, I'm SO happy you got to see this in person. The pictures can't even begin to capture this ancient place. Pics not only don't capture the look of the place but they don't even come close to capturing the feel of Chaco. To be there at sunrise & sunset & see the varied light & shadows, to hear the birds & lizards & look through windows that that others looked through hundreds of years ago is beyond words. What gift you will give your grandkids. Thank you 4 sharing. It's appreciated.

  • Lovely pic of the petroglyphs and the flower detail. I love the music, your flute Robin is very sweet, thanks for sharing. Chaco canyon is certainly one of the most spiritual places one can visit in a life time... Cheers

  • Dear Bothropsasper, Thank you for your very kind words. they touched me. I too just LOVE this place and will return many times. As you know, it's not really about just seeing the dwelings; there is such strong presence here still imprinted in the rock and earth, the whole area. As you say it is a spiritual place. One senses they are standing on the ground of a very rich culture filled with wisdom & connection to Earthy. Thank you. :)

  • been there it was pretty cool an those steps that go up to the top of those canyons

  • Great .. Thanx for sharing !

  • It is indeed a very peaceful place. I was able to go to Aztec Ruins this past summer, but the monsoon rains prevented me from getting to Chaco. 20 miles of mud road is not condusive to a pleasant trip with my wife and son. I hope to get there this coming fall.

  • @scheming8rythem I too live very close to the chaco canyon park.. Ive visited very recently but heard there were some off limit petroglyphs depicting a reptilian humanoid with decapitated warriors from the chacoan society.. Are these the ruins you speak of?

  • Wish I could make it back down there. A special place, indeed.

  • @scheming8rythem where do you live?

  • What were the circular structures for?

  • Thanks for sharing! I'm going there for the first time this coming weekend. Can barely wait! :)

  • Went there in the late 70's and again in the late 80's. the first time the walls did not need support beams...
