I Ia Trying to find out why the Elevator Moror In On The First Floor This Is An Old Cable Elevator Hot Does it turn the cables to move the car from the first floor. There must be a shaft that goes to the roof.

  • I Recorded this Video when i worked security at this school. This Moror is on the first floor of the building and it is a cable car. On The Roof there is something there for the cables i never went up there but there is a little house on the roof it must be for the cables but i could never find out why the motor and everything was on the first floor and how it all worked. If Someone could tell me that would be great. Mind you i do not work here any more so i cand go back to get another picture.

  • There are a lot of Payne elevators in the Boston area. Compared to other makes, they seem really cheap, noisy, and often don't work as expected. Sometimes when there's another passenger there and the elevator's acting up, I'll say to them, "This elevator is really a Payne". They'll agree and say they hate it too, but then when I point out the elevator is actually named "Payne", it's always good for a laugh!

  • @ElmerCat You are Right About this. When I Worked there Every time there was more than one person on the elevator' it would get stuck. We Would Have to Have the fire department come and get the people out. It way a Payne.

  • @syg068 I Worked There as a Security Guard.

  • This sounds like a gear less basement traction machine probably 1:1 roping, given the sheave is mounted directly to the motor shaft, the housing above the shaft, for the sheaves. As commented and to the best of my knowledge, M-G's are used only for traction elevators, hydraulic power units are AC 3 Phase motors, valves control the oil flow into the cylinder.

  • the shaft you saw in the vid it is connected directly to the sheave.

It don't run to the roof, It drives the sheave

At the "pit" of the elevator-shaft that is why,

    they call it "bottom drive".

  • Yes, since hydraulics are inefficient, even without the MG sets, but traction elevators with MG sets are not only expensive and inefficient, they're also dirty and noisy.

  • no they are not needed since variable speed is controlled using oil flow through the valves. MG sets are extremely expensive and inefficient for hydro use.

  • Since this is a traction elevator, I wonder if any hydraulic elevators used motor generators.
