SALT OF THE EARTH

Matthew 5:13-16 (New American Standard Bible)

13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how will it be made salty again? It is good for nothing anymore, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 “Nor do men light a lamp, and put it under the peck-measure, but on the lampstand; and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Perhaps it’s difficult for you to imagine yourself being salt. The Lord does make that comparison. The lesson he is teaching involves the effectiveness of our life on earth.

Most everyone wants to be successful and productive in life. We instinctively want to have a positive effect upon those around us. We want to be considered a person of value, who makes a difference in life by touching others in a positive manner.

Jesus compared us as being salt. Salt is used both as a flavoring and as a preservative.

It seems to be such a small element in our list of foods, but has a tremendous effect upon our health and enjoyment. It produces joy and pleasure when appropriately used.

Jesus said; we are like the salt. In other words, we are a preservative and flavor to those that we touch. If our life radiates the Spirit of Christ and the joy of his redemption, we are going to touch others in a very wonderful and productive way.

If we have lost our love for the things of God, and walk in unrighteousness or rebellion, we are like the salt that has lost its flavor. We are good for nothing. Our influence is gone. It is possible that we have become worse than useless.

It’s important to remember that God has dispersed us among those in the world to display his wonderful gospel and reveal the majesty of our Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ. We repel the darkness of sin. ...
