In defense of John Williams:
"Good composers don't borrow; they steal."
- Igor Stravinsky

A *good* artist is someone who plagiarizes *good* works. No harm in that, and certainly not to be considered an insult
-
Sounds similar but I wouldn't call it plagiarism. More like a musical influence.

"I really have to take issue with all of the charges of plagiarism against John Williams. Yes, he sometimes writes in the style of Wagner, or Holst, or Elgar, or Stravinsky, etc. Sometimes he writes in completely different styles, like in "Catch Me If you Can" or "Memoirs of a Geisha."
Write two+ hours of music in 8-12 weeks, and do it so that every gesture expertly serves the film, brings the movie to life and gives the story a flawless sense of atmosphere and architecture." -Eric Whitacre

Many film directors tell the composer what they want their music to "sound like" and get completely tied to it, so composers end up creating a resemblence.

@phantomfn8 he is infamous for stealing music

Kings Row music is magical...

@lostvocals4 I don't think the orchestration or the feel are quite the same. Williams is using more rhythmic texture with the trumpet taking the lead while in the Korngold it's more homophonic. Korngold has a more regal feel while Williams takes a more epic feel. Also keep in mind that for this particular movie, Lucas wanted JW to stick close to the temp tracks. Korngold, Holst, and Stravinsky were all in the temp tracks.

the thing is...if you listen...only the first five notes are the same...thats all...John Williams is one of the greatest modern movie composers of all time...he didnt get that reputation from "stealing" from others
