Most people that "think" that someone can just leave are people who have never ever been brainwashed. Brainwashing is a very complicated, intense process that can happen without anyone else even witnessing it. While the some of the public might have thought that Patty could have left anytime, anyone that knows anything about brainwashing, and kidnapping understands that sometimes it is impossible to leave, impossible to leave. Patty chose life and had no chance to leave anytime before that.
