TIBET: MONKS PROTEST IN FRONT OF FOREIGN PRESS IN GANSU
AGI) - Beijing, 9 April - About fifteen monks from an important Buddhist monastery in north-western China have slipped through police surveillance and put on a pro-Tibet protest in front of foreign journalists. The incident occurred in the Labrang monastery in the province of Gansu during one of the "guided tours" for the foreign press organized by the Chinese government to show off the most evocative places in the country. As previously occurred in Tibet, some monks approached journalists and showed banners while chanting slogans in support of the dalai Lama and the Himalayan region, as reported by some of the journalists in the group. The official press agency Xinhua confirmed that a group of monks had "interrupted" the foreign press tour but declined to provide further details.
