I think OpenSocial will evolve overtime and like many technologies and software in beta get better and more refined. This update may be what you are looking for. Do a YouTube search "Introduction to the Social Graph API" to hear Brad speak.

Look at it from Google's point of view: Multiple websites, one API, ONE CRAWLER.

The important thing here is that OpenSocial avoids FBML variants like Hi5ML, MySpaceML, BeboML and so on.
But you're right, they really avoided anything "social" in OpenSocial.
