http://www.coolflatroof.com/flat-roofing-blog/metal-roofing-attleboro-ma/ - This video demonstrates the process of cutting a grove in a masonry chimney with a grinder and diamond blade. This is done to later install a counter flashing.

This roof is a Tamko Metal Works Steel Shingles in Aston Wood profile, with custom chimney flashing and counter flashing.

  • does cutting into the brick weaken it or lets water in to cause freeze damage?

  • @blankthree - I do not see how it can weaken the entire chimney, since the weakest point is the mortar in the brick joints. The cut is only 3/4" deep, and does not decrease the brick's or chimney's integrity.

As far as moisture - brick is porous by itself, so if it absorbs moisture, it will do so without the help of the reglet (cut). Ofter the chimney is flashed and counter-flashing is installed, we insert shims to hold the counter-flashing in place and seal/waterproof cut with SolarSeal 900.
