HULL DIGITAL STRATEGY : Joining the dots (Script)
So,
Youre looking for a digital strategy
One is that is going to join the dots and move Hull Forward
But the dots are not so simple nor in a straight line and within each sector are more sectors
You get the picture
You know the picture
But how do we join the dots?
Perhaps we start at the core
Turn the problem inside out, back to front
Lets start with what is digital?
•Is it the internet?
•Is it the technology?
•Is it the software?
•Is it the gadgets?
No!
Digital is a means of communication
Digital is a form of literacy
With digital we can :
•Learn by ourselves or with others
•Communicate with others
•Collaborate with others
•Connect with others
•Share with others
•Organise ourselves and others, with others
Digital is new essential literacy to have now
No matter what age, life stage, or sector
Returning to joining the dots, or more importantly a digital strategy
IT (I T) needs to start with people
We need to look at those sectors and companies that can enable the community.
But these organisations are not themselves enabled.
Lets start with those sectors that are enabled: National Government, Cultural sectors, Corporates
Then those that should be enabled : Education, Local Government and NHS as they connect with their communities.
Small to Medium enterprises, micros, start-ups and pre-starts, connecting with clients and reducing initial start-up costs
Arts Centres, Social Enterprises, Charities, not-for-profit groups and CVS to enable them to engage and strengthen their communities especially children, black and minority ethnic groups, and prison.
Those that could be enabled but are not enabled are: NEETS, the elderly, single parents, Long-term unemployed, and care workers.
Lets not forget the Libraries, Business Link, Business Link Social Enterprise.
If we enable those that SHOULD be enabled then the others would naturally follow. This leads to a digital lifestyle where we can engage with each other and the community digitally, have digital inclusion, and a digital lifestyle and economy.
So how could this work?
1.Invest in the people
a.Train key workers who are engaging with the community or helping the economy such as:
i.SMEs, local government, education, NHS, Micro businesses, social enterprises, start-ups, pre-starts and the community voluntary sector
ii.Implement and train up people in the use of collaborative online technologies such as wikis or Google docs so that people can refer and amend one document
iii.Look at alternative communication methods using online technologies such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn as well as mobile devices
b.Understand the digital landscape:
i.What is the current and proven best practise?
ii.What are the rules and legislation good and bad
iii. What devices are available? What is the best device, method, software to reach our community or client ... which ones do we drop?
c.Build confidence in adopting and using these technologies
2.Work with key workers to develop specific uses for required outcomes such as:
a.Remote working :
i.For example in Epidemic circumstances like Swine Flu
ii.Or cutting down travel costs through delivery of online courses or web meetings.
b.Flexible working:
i.Using mobile broadband for mobile workers and those living in rural areas
c.Using collaboration tools to:
i.Reduce paper
ii.Reduce server space
iii.Reduced documentation storage
iv.Transparent version control
d.Using audio visual media to communicate why not with over 40,000 media graduates a year!
i.Video is an accessible communication tool (correct on film)
ii.Video calling and face-to-face meetings that can be recorded for other people to see if they missed out on the conversation.
e.Social or should it be Knowledge Media
i.Fast sharing of information. Could it be used for Disaster recovery?
ii.Strengthening and building online communities sharing information
So what are the Benefits otherwise known as the afters
Well well have a digitally enabled and confident community. One that can
•Communicate faster
•Learn faster
•Adapt faster
•Use less material resources
•Generate less Carbon emissions
•More inclusive
•Increased adaptable working.
An innovative community is a more successful community.
Could this be part of Hulls Digital Strategy?.
