Winning was a surprise

DANVILLE -- For Brooke Pence, the easiest part of the Hendricks County 4-H Queen Contest came after the competition.

Though still a bit stunned at having won the title, Pence took a moment to catch her breath and relax backstage with friends and family.

"I wasn't expecting a lot," the 18-year-old Danville resident said with a laugh. "I was hoping just to get into the top 10, but it turned out unexpectedly well."

The annual queen contest, held Wednesday night in the auditorium of the 4-H Fairgrounds and Conference Center, serves as a prelude to the fair, which begins Sunday and runs through July 28.
