Oh, Fantastic Bunraku! The prototype was made as for this program in 1991 and represents the life of Jesus Christ.

Though I'm not Christian, I was very impressed by this "Gospel in Bunraku" when I heard it at the first time in Tokyo.
------------------------------------
This is new version. It was amended end title.

"Gospel in Bunraku"
1.The Life of Jesus
2.The Lord's Supper
3.Jesus' Crucifixion
4.The Resurrection of Jesus

December 3th, 2004. in Catholic Kobe Central Church
------------------------------------
Bunraku is the traditional puppet theater of Japan, an outstanding stage art of which Japan can be very proud. Bunraku's world renown stems not only from its high-quality artistic technique,
but also from the high level of its "joruri music" and the unique nature of manipulating the puppets -- each puppet requires three puppeteers to bring it to life.
------------------------------------
According to HANAFUSADAYU, this program was performed with Ningyo (puppet) at 13 times and without ningyo named sujoruri at 67 times in the past as of July 2008.

The scene of "The Resurrection of Jesus" had not been sometimes performed. But, this time, the DVD was released including all scenes fortunately.

Now, I uploaded short version in 10 minutes after having received a permission of HANAFUSADAYU and other staffs/casts concerned.

Though this DVD(NTSC) is not for sale, you will be able to know how to get it if you contact official URL as below :http://gosbun.com or http://hanabusadayu.com/

  • I up-loaded this video for one like you!!

New Bunraku is a little in Japan today.

But, there is a chance that the new work and the forgotten work is performed a few.

It is very popular recently though Bunraku temporarily became unpopular.

Sometimes, Japanese pelple can wached old bunraku on TV program. But I can't up-loaded the TV program because of the copyright.

  • Oh, Thank you!

  • JUST AMAZING! I have been a long time fan of Bunraku, and this is one of the better examples on YouTube. And they present the Passion in a way that makes it look interesting and fresh. Thanks for sharing this!

  • Thank you. This video was up-loaded for just like you who understood about Bunraku. I think the people (like you) who understand about art and culture are necessary for Bunraku. Bunraku does some traditional performances and some new performances (like this video), and keeps freshness. I want a lot of Bunraku fans to know some new performances. I am very glad to read your comment. :)

  • wow

  • Only this is a surprise. :)

  • impressive! very impressive! ^_^

I'd love to see this live :)

  • Have always been fascinated by Bunraku and was amazed at this performance. The internet is a rich resource of art and cultures.

  • This is so cool! A little weird but definitely amazing.

  • Thank you for uploading this!

I'm studying the plays of famous playwright, Chikamatsu, and wanted to see some examples of bunraku, with which the plays would've been performed. Not only is this video one of the best examples on YouTube, but I was surprised that the art form is still popular and used for stories other than that of historical Japanese pieces.

  • I am very impressed!
