In 2005 a baby dolphin was rescued off the coast of Florida after being caught up in a crab trap. After the dolphin lost its tail, Prosthetists Dan Strzempka and Kevin Carroll collaborated to design a prosthetic tail that could protect the spine of Winter the Dolphin, who had learned to swim using a compensatory motion that could damage her spine.

In the quest to fit a tail, there were a number of challenges, in particular, the wet conditions, the sensitive skin of the dolphin and the need to increase comfort to prevent rejection of the tail by Winter. In the course of addressing these challenges a new gel liner (WintersGel) was developed.

Now WintersGel liner has been adapted for humans with limb deficiencies and offers a skin friendly gentle adhesive that keeps skin healthy, increases cushioning and comfort, and stays in place better under challenging conditions.

Hanger's portfolio of WintersGel prosthetic liners includes a fabric cushion and locking version as well as a non fabric suction liner. For more information visit hanger.com/winterthedolphin.
