@jamexxxxxx The language in Brazil is Portuguese, which has a Latin root like Spanish, therefore both languages have many similarities and if you speak slowly people might understand you. Anyway, a booklet with phrases in Portuguese would also be very useful.

Sou português e visitei no ano passado toda a região de MG - adorei - realmente o Brasil é um país de visita obrigatória.

If you speak it correctly they do understand it. Very few are able to speak it but If you are fluent in Spanish you will understand slow Portuguese.
