a sat phone will work anywhere in the world at any time.
with a cell phone, u have to be "near" a sending mast. that means that u won't be able to get a signal out in the mountains, the dessert, or the sea.

Cell phones bounce their signal off a cell towers you see everywhere.
Sat phone send signals directly to one of many comm sat's in low orbit geo sync satellites.
Instead of using the land lines, they go straight from your phone to the birds above and vice versa. Real cool stuff. The Iridium company is one of the bigger providers out there. pretty pricey but if your going to be in th emoddle of nowhere this is the kind of comm gear you want to have.
