This is a quick comparison between the Canon 5Dii Full Frame Camera compared with the Canon 7D. What are you really getting for that extra $800-900? How do they compare for video features? How do they compare for portrait work? Focusing Systems? ISO Noise? Which is more versatile? Which is the better value? All these questions and more are answered in this video. If you own a 7D and are in need of a great training video, you can order it from the following link: http://michaelthementor.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=... - Enjoy! :)

  • I think I'm going to have to get the 7D crash course, Mike. I just upgraded from a Canon Rebel xsi, which I knew inside and out (and I used your crash course for that camera which helped me achieve some award winning photos in China, Korea and New Zealand so thanks for that!). The 7D is a whole lot of camera and the simplicity of the Rebel is gone.

Thanks for the tutorials. They're very helpful.

  • @AmyBLUF Wow! great to hear! The 7D is a whole different ball game- especially in the focusing systems. I LOVE mine.

  • why the hell are you filming in 4:3 when you can film in 16:9 on either of your 5D ii or 7D?

  • @JayKayRause Please google: "Sensor Size Depth of Field" Thank you.

  • Question is, will something succeed the 7d soon?

  • @EPMvideos This is why I said "all things being equal" larger media = more shallow DOF. Once the conversation starts to include other variables and conditions, it creates all kinds of confusion. Anyone who still has questions about it should carefully read it.

  • @MichaelTheMentor the wiki article is quite clear, depth of field is DIFFERENT depending on format size with relation to the 3 elements that affect the image, ie aperture, focal length and distance. There is no confusing regarding the 3 optical elements that effect dof but clearly there is regarding the sensor size. It is a great read if you can understand it. DOF is an optical phenomenon.

  • @momi63 Better is the wrong word to use. They are both good cameras. I could say the 7D is better because it has superior focus capabilities, or faster shutter speeds, yada yada, but that's not the point of this comparison. It really depends what your needs are.

  • Michael, you've covered the areas that were important when I selected the 7D over the 5D MkII. I could have gone either way, price was not an issue. But, coming from the 50D and considering what I mostly use the camera for, the 7D hit all the hot buttons. There is a lot of snobbishness among some 5D users, and that's a shame as it sways some buyers to make the wrong choice at times. It took me 6 months to make my mind up, and really that's what it can take to make a sound decision either way.

  • @EPMvideos- DOF to Media relationship depends on conditions of comparison. If you have 2 identical cameras, the only exception being the size of the sensor, the one with the bigger sensor has less DOF. Changing Aperture, Lens Focal Length & Distance only creates confusion on the relationship of Sensor size to DOF. There is an excellent Wiki article called "Depth of Field" - > DOF vs Format Size lists all the variables and conclusions. Its a great read if there is still any confusion.

  • @MichaelTheMentor you mean compensate for Effective focal length, as actual focal length does not change with the size of the sensor. And i guess you mean "all things being equal" in accordance to the FOV, and not in terms fixed distance and focal length and aperture, am i right?

  • @EPMvideos All things being equal, larger media produces a more shallow DOF. Period. Its pretty well known. The argument you are making introduces a second variable (in this case, distance to compensate for focal length on a cropped sensor). I know there is a video on Youtube somewhere that emphatically states what you are suggesting, and the truth is it isn't accurate. Please google: "Sensor Size Depth of Field" for more information.
