He relates some of the terrible stories he's encountered throughout his extensive travels, and explains how these stories inspired him to create the human-rights watchdog group WITNESS, which distributes digital cameras to ordinary citizens so they can document injustice and abuse.

I think Peter's talking about something worse than merely being beaten up. I take from what he said here that he experienced sexual abuse at his public school like many others before and after him. I think this explains his acute shyness at the beginning of his career and perhaps also the motivation for him to seek the limelight at all. But the true artist turns muck into gold, which is what is so extraordinary about this guy.
