China Airlines Boeing 747-2R7F/SCD seen here in December 1991. This beauty crashed on December 29th 1991. It crashed into a mountain after takeoff from Taipei. A maintenance error led to an engine detaching. In memory of the 5 crew members on board. The flight information for the final flight is located below.This particular crash led Boeing to recall every 747 in use for pylon modifications.

Ill fated it was - it was hijacked once to China. There was a problem with one engine, then the pylon holding another one on the opposite side detached taking another engine. Probably only had one engine in full workng order near the end. One of the crew members was a fellow aviation history buff. He would look things up in the archives in Taiwan for us and bring hard copies in those pre-broadband internet and scanned pdf days. Good guy and sadly missed ...

CAL used to have horrendous safety record, as the flight crew were recruited straight from ROCAF with little transition training. It has improved somewhat since 2008, as training now focuses on cockpit resource management.
