Blackface Minstrelsy Outline

Introduction
Many people see black face minstrelsy as a prohibitory to our society moving away from slavery and moving toward a more accepting cohesive society. Blackface Minstrelsy was not a prohibitory movement however, it was a facilitator.

Proposition
Blackface minstrelsy has paved the way for many other types of theatre and helped made musical theatre more popular and accepted worldwide.

Significance
Many of our audience members and members of our society enjoy theatre, whether it be live or videotaped. Blackface minstrelsy was a stepping stone in evolving the are of theatre to what it is today.

Credibility
This topic I have researched and studied throughout my many years in theatre. I have gained incredible expertise on this subject and have also developed a keen sense of learning more about it.

Body
I. Blackface minstrelsy is an imitation of black slaves and ex-slaves by white people on stage

II. This art form spread throughout the world because that one small group started touring all over the world and influencing other playwrights.

III. This form was first introduced with the Adventures of Tom Sawyer in 1843, New York. Although, it was meant to only be entertainment for and degradation to black slaves and people, many white upper class men and women came to the show because it represented white supremacy.

IV. In the 20th century this art form began to decline.

Conclusion
I believe that blackface minstrelsy was prevalent to its time and as does every movement died down after and few decades. It has paved the way for many other types of theatre and helped made musical theatre more popular and accepted. Blackface minstrelsy has been put down as part of black history because those shows told the story of black people and how they were perceived back in the late 18oo's an and early 19oo's. It gave black people the courage and drives to change the world's view of them and let them know, that slavery was coming into extinction and that equality in America applied to them as well. Black participates in the shows, started to sway people in the sense that in some people's attempt, not everyone who participate in black minstrelsy, to degrade them and mock their different look, they would come back and show them the opposite. Blackface Minstrelsy was not a torture it was a facilitator.
