Today we take a look at Phil's first Coracle, he shows us how he built in and uses it. Here is a link to Phil's Forum Thread: http://www.naturalbushcraft.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?804-Making-a-Coracle

  • How long does that one last and how careful do you need to be with it?

If I was to make a really quick, shitty one from sticks/saplings kangaroo hide, how long do you think it would last and how careful would I need to be with it?

  • @ytdcfjhvjvp0j Is this a serious question? It's just I can't see you making a "quick, shitty one" from sticks and Kangaroo hides!?... and also if it was done hastily in a rush how could we predict your build quality and how long it might last? Impossible to answer to be honest - If it's going to be a "quick one" I'd say try it and see ;) I don't have any experience of the size and quality of Kangaroo hides either!

  • Nice vid. Now that you've made one how long do you think it would take you to build if you didn't have other projects going on?

  • @10yearvet Accessing the resources is the other thing, do you mean if you had all the resources ready to go aswell? (I didn't make the Coracle but I will forward your question on to Phil who did make it).

  • Is there suppose to be a massive ending with blackness?

    Great video!!!

  • @RuralSurvival Yes - it's there to mess with your mind :p

  • When i first saw the thumbnail for this video i thought ''What on earth is that!?''. It reminded me of a Buffalo hide Coracle Ray Mears built in the Bushcraft - America episode! 2:52 me made laugh - ''Causing major sinkage!''. Brilliant video Phil & Ashely!

  • I can just imagine that getting in and out of that thing is a trick! And you wouldn't want to go over sharp rocks. But after the basic technique is mastered, it's probably great fun.

  • @NaturalBushcraft Thanks. I guess it's not really important but I was just a bit curious. Bad failing of mine, always want to know everything and wanting to learn more.

  • @10yearvet. Hi, if I had all the willow ready to go I'd say about a day to get the gunwhale/ribs woven and lashed. Then it would be best to leave it in the ground for a week with a plank on it, with rocks piled on the plank to flatten the hull. Then another day to sew the canvas on. Then 3 days of waterproofing... One coat per day, leaving each coat to dry for a day in between.

I work a lot of hours, and have lots going on too, so it got done as and when.

In summary, 2 weeks bud, but that depe
